A Career with McDonald's - Restaurant Manager

There are currently 150 McDonald's restaurants throughout the country and Claire Dickson from Otago Girls High School is about to find out what goes into running one successfully. Operations Manager Mike McCaffrey explains one of the main roles of any restaurant manager is to ensure outstanding customer service, a clean environment, business planning and profitability. Part of that includes employing the right people for the right job and Claire is soon involved sitting in on interview for a prospective employee. Experience isn't essential as many of those applying for crew member roles have no work experience and are still at school but enthusiasm is a must. Staff have regular performance reviews which allow management and employees to create a development path to move forward. Claire discovers one of the perks of being the restaurant manager includes taste testing to ensure customers are always getting the highest quality product as attention to detail in all aspects of the business is crucial. Planning is another important role and with between 80 and 90 crew members and 10 managers at just one McDonald's, everyone must be kept in the loop. Claire runs the shift manager's meeting and explains a new promotion about to be marketed. Having started as a crew member, Mike has worked his way up to a management role that he absolutely loves. Claire can see there is plenty of potential for a great career within a company that thrives on fun and success. A Career with McDonald's - Crew Member

One of the first ports of call for anyone working at McDonald's, including the CEO, is learning the ropes of a crew member. This week Brianna Park from Fraser High School in Hamilton is off to find out what this entry level job is all about. Shift manager Oliver Henry explains crew members are involved with food safety, assembling of food, packing food orders and serving customers. Brianna is soon testing her burger assembly skills to see if she has what it takes to become a 'master burger builder!' A burger is one thing but can she conquer the art of making a good coffee? Oliver is an example of the opportunities available with McDonald's as he has quickly moved up the ranks from crew member to crew trainer and now shift supervisor. He originally wanted the job to earn some money but now sees the long term opportunities available. Brianna's experience continues as she mans the drive through window where team work is the number one priority to ensure customers get their order quickly and accurately. Last year McDonald's announced it was reinvesting $100m into upgrading existing restaurants and building new ones so more crew members will be needed and even if you're still at school, what better way to earn some cash with flexible shifts and a fun working environment.
