A Career in Teaching - Performing Arts Teacher (JTJS62011)

Performing Arts Teacher David from Rongotai College enjoys dance and drama so is the perfect person to find out more about what it takes to be a performing arts teacher. He heads to Aotea College and meets Trey Salanoa, the teacher in charge of the school's Academy of Performing Arts. Trey explains the role involves helping young people engage in their learning through music, dance, drama and singing. "You have to make sure young people are motivated and interested in the task in front of them," she says. "By using dance, music and drama you can teach values of respect and self belief." David assists Trey with her first class of the day, a dance class. The class is split into groups and Trey and David step back a little but are on hand to empower the students to explore their creativity as they choreograph their own dances. Being organised and well planned is a key part of this role so Trey sets David the task of planning for the next class, a Polynesian dance group. David prepares his research and takes the class teaching them a new dance. The aim is to extend the students outside their comfort zone to engage and show appreciation for other cultures. Next up is a drama class followed by a music group which has been working on a performance for six weeks and is now ready to present. A passion and heart for teaching are keys to success in this career.
